Configure a printer

The intent of this article is to guide the configuration of a printer used to create a shipping label.

Windows

Most of the time, standard desktop printers, whether laser or inkjet, will not require the installation of additional drivers. Plug the printer in, turn it on, and set your preferences.

Add Printer to the Control Panel

Connect your printer to your Windows device power it on. Most printers will automatically appear in your Devices & Printers Control Panel. If your printer does not automatically appear, you will need to add it.

To add the printer to the Control Panel:

  1. Go to Devices & Printers in the Control Panel.
  2. Tap Add a Printer.
  3. Select your printer from the list of connected printers that appears.

Configure Printer Preferences

  1. Right-click your printer icon in the Printer list and choose Printing Preferences.
  2. Set the paper size to 8.5″ x 11″ or the closest option.
  3. Set Print Settings for Graphics or Barcodes and Graphics.
  4. Set Print Quality to 300dpi.

MacOS

The model of your printer dictates if your printer will auto-configure itself. Other considerations include if the printer requires a driver and if that driver is pre-installed on your Mac or not.

MacOS standard configuration

First, connect your printer to your Mac via USB, then follow the steps below.

  1. Open System Preferences and choose Printers & Scanners.
  2. Tap the + sign under the list of printers.
    1. Tap Add Printer, if prompted.
  3. Select your printer from the list of printers in the Add pop-up screen. 
  4. Check the Use drop-down menu to see if your Mac has the correct driver auto selected.
  5. Tap Add.
