South America has a complex and expansive network of roadways. The Transamazonian Highway and the Marginal de la Selva Highway link the countries on the east side of the Andes Mountains. The size and variety of the physical environment make travel by roadway a challenge in some remote areas of the continent. The region contains long coastlines along the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea that allow for high volumes of freight transport through these waterways.
